National Memorial Chorten
This large chorten/stupa was built in 1974 as a memorial to the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928–72) and as a tribute to world peace (“Mind of Buddha”). It is one of the most beloved landmarks in Thimphu, and a focus of daily worship for many Bhutanese. Early morning and evening is a great time to visit the National Memorial Chorten when most of Thimphu’s local population, young and elderly congregate to circumambulate the stupa.

A visit to Gangtey Valley is an extremely rare experience due to the spectacular view of the graceful Black-necked Cranes in action.
